Reading Diary - THE BEAST (PART ONE) #1

Dear Rhage,

first of all: don't you fuckin' dare to die! Because, goddamnit, if you do, I swear to the Scribe Virgin I'm gonna kill you! I am begging you, as your sister (at least in the fanfiction where you're not running into a freakin' girl's school full of Lesser to kill yourself, idiot), you have to get through this. That book just started, and you still have to care for Mary (not to mention you're the only family your twin-siblings still have in that fanfiction).
However, I love the way V tries to save your stupid ass. And I hope your beast won't snack him or Butch - because they are trying to save you goddamn life. And yes, I swear a lot because how stupid was that action? Even for you.
The most concerning thing about this whole Rhage-might-die-within-the-first-twenty-pages-thing is that V's never wrong. And you got shot in the heart. And now your beast's breaking free and I really hope this will save you. Or whatever Vishous is up to now that he left Butch with the purple and evil version of you.
I love how V gets so much extra space in this book (even though I would love to read more of Phury - of course). Can't wait to find out what Mary will do to help that little girl whose mother just died. And there are so many secrets about Assail, son of whoever, that we need to solve some of these mysteries, too.
But only if you don't die. I don't wanna have to fix all of this in the fanfiction again.
Oh, and I am so fuckin' sorry for buying this book so late. This never happened before. Holy hell, I will finish it even faster now - Promise!
Still, my dear brother, to say it in your own words: you are too handsome to die. So, Hollywood, how about you get this clear, take one of your lollies and relax. Just stop causing heart attacks; not within the first twenty pages.
Don't you dare to die!
Love,
Danni (enraged by your overly stupid behavior, dear brother)

Reading Diary - THE BEAST (PART ONE) #2

Dear Rhage,

So you didn't die. Thank you for this.
Still I have no idea why for fuck's sake you had to run into this Girl's School to get killed even though Vishous warned you. Thank the Scribe Virgin for Mary and her smart ideas (although I'm not sure if I should thank the Scribe Virgin for anything 'cause basically she did nothing but refuse to help you. Hope she slips on V's blood and breaks her hip.) How crazy that the beast saved your life! Well played, J.R. Ward, well played. I didn't expect that.
What I don't get: Why does Mary act as if she did anything bad to your relationship. I mean, maybe I'm just noch sensitive enough, but I don't see the problem. Why the hell don't you guys just talk? Oh, an thank you Warden for letting Phury say ONE WHOLE SENTENCE. God, can't be that hard to involve him a little more. I mean, it's been quite a while since he kicked ass and we actually read about it, right? Give me more of that hot gentleman manor paired with shit kickers and black leather, please.
And I got a feeling that the Layla-Xcor-thing will blow up soon, now that Butch brought him to the mansion. Fritz won't be happy about all the blood, but hey! C'est la vie (and to be honest, I believe he will love it 'cause it'll cause him tons of cleaning work). And what's going on with Assail? Can he please just go to Florida and get Marisol, so he doesn't have to take cocaine? And will Tohr find out about Xcor and him being brothers?
But besides all of this, the book just gives me all the feels. Combined with the Alter Bridge songs I currently listen to (which feel like they are a soundtrack for all the Black Dagger Novels) it just sends me back to a nicer place where things worked out fine and where I felt good and happy and connected to something and someone. Nothing brings up the past faster than a Black Dagger Brotherhood novel. Still, they are so good and the feel like I'm healing and burning at the same time. Can't wait to read on.

Thank you for being back, Rhage.

Love,
Danni

Reading Diary - THE BEAST (PART ONE) #3

Dear Rhage,

Just when I thought you were ok, you decided to destroy my life again. Why for heaven's sake did you try to kill yourself? Like, suicide, seriously? You won't be able to enter the Fade then. Won't spend the afterlife with Mary. Or your siblings. Asshole!

When will book characters finally start to talk about things, so all the drama would be unnecessary? Seeing you so sad and lonely drives me crazy. Especially as you have your brothers and they are so so so awesome.I just loved how they paid respect to Mary because she had the idea to save you via your beast. The behavior of this little girl - Bitty - breaks my heart. God, I can't wait to see you taking care of her (as I'm sure you will because having a baby in your arms caused you a heart attack). And I'm curious what exactly Assail should do for Wrath now. I mean, yeah, infiltrating the Glymera, but why and how?
The only thing that annoys me is that human female - Jo. It's like back in the days when the Warden had parts from the view of a Lesser in her books. I'd rather read more about you eating bagels and tons of ice cream.
Now I'm halfway through the first half of your second book. And I love you even more now. I'm proud I chose you as my brother for the FF. But just don't try to kill yourself again, ok? Thanks.

Love,
Danni (so worried about her FF-brother)

Reading Diary - THE BEAST (PART ONE) #4

Dear Mary,

What a lucky female you are. I knew it all the way, that Rhage would be awesome as a dad, but reading about him talking to Bitty, making her smile - holy hell! I want more of this. More happy family. And I know you want the same. But besides this, it's good you finally talked about your problems. Things will be better.
It's a little different with Layla I assume. The Brothers and the other housemates won't be too happy when they finally find out about her and Xcor. Even though I don't like how she deals with her feelings. Can't she just accept that she is not perfect, and can she please stop feeling guilty.
And please give us more little scenes with Beth and L.W. - and even better with the brothers and their children.
And write another book about Phury, J.R.! Title: The Primale. It's that easy.
However, I guess Assail will get his own book first. Things are getting pretty intense with him and Throe and I can't wait to read more about this. Marisol will return of course.
What worries me is the thing with the humans. They shouldn't get that close to your world - although you got that close to it, too, which is the only reason why you're here. Still I find Jo Early annoying as fuck. If humans have to be included, I suggest a reunion of Butch and Jose DeLaCruz.
So far, I hope you will find a way to get Bitty to the mansion - with Rhage as her new dad.

Love,
Danni

Reading Diary - THE BEAST (PART ONE) #5

Dear Assail,

You've been gaining much attention lately, so I thought it's time to focus more on your story. I can't really tell if I like you or despise you because of your behavior. Actually, I think you are a quite interesting character who is more of a friend than an enemy and who is rather loyal to the King which makes me like you more. You remind me a little of Rehvenge - dark, mysterious and broken, but an important ally.
I like to read about you, but it annoys me how you feel too bad and too dirty for Marisol. We all know that she loves you, too. You just have to have the courage to get her back to Caldwell, to your house. Another cool things is the friendship you start to develop with Vishous. Maybe you should just live with the Brotherhood. Would be some fresh blood in the mansion.
One thing's for certain, you found the most hilarious way to but pressure on Throe. I definitely need to know more about his plans. But please, whatever comes next, stop taking cocaine. We all know what happens when a warrior in a Black Dagger Brotherhood novel is a drug addict - even though I won't fall in love with you as you are just not Phury. He went through it, you don't have to do the same.

So, that's it first. I'm waiting for your own book to come - rather sooner than later.

Sincerely,
Danni

Reading Diary - THE BEAST (PART ONE) #6

Dear J.R. Ward,

So I finished the first part of THE BEAST - and I LOVED it! Thank you for being this crazy author who writes the best vampire novels the world has ever seen.

So far, I mostly love that you bring back the original brothers. As Rhage means a lot to me, I'm overly happy to read about him and his life again - even though the beginning of the book made me concerned and, yes, also sad. But I can see where this is going and I know it will be wonderful to read about him being a dad.

I also like the overall story about the Lessening Society and the Band of Bastards. It's getting interesting when it comes to Layla and Xcor on the one hand and Assail and Throe on the other. By the way, Assail turned out to be a fantastic character, part asshole, part broken-hearted, loyal in the end, full of surprises. I can see a friendship with Vishous developping and this will be amazing.
It's always the harder part to work through the texts from Jo Early's eyes. However, as I know you never just do things because that's it, I am sure this will lead us to a new phase of problems for the Brotherhood. I hope this will get more interesting in time.

Your style of writing is still a crazy good mixture. Funny, yet serious and always easy to read. I also think it's good that you put a little less sex scenes in there when it comes to the brothers because we basically know about that a lot. However, that Assail-Throe-thing is a good fun read.

What's left to say? I want the second part of that book. That's what I hate about it, that the German publisher splits it up in two to make more money (also because the book got more expensive anyways). It's just the time I wait - can't stand that.

Keep on being crazy and writing these novels. Thanks.

Sincerely,
Danni

It's time to talk about... Assail

Xcor laughed with genuine respect. "You know what they say about suicide, don't you. No Fade for them." "Its not suicide if you shoot me first. Self-defense." "And your willing to test that out?" "If you are.”
― J.R. Ward - Lover Reborn
As a fan of the Black Dagger Brotherhood series, I accompanied many awesome characters through their development and got to know many on the way. The newest member of this very big and lovely family is a vampire called Assail, some badass bastard who is such a round character, I am willing to put him as number three on my list of BDB-characters I would marry (right behind Rehv who’s my number two and Phury – of course – being number one). This might also be because I understand the way Assail lives. It’s basically the way I would do it if I was in his situation. We’re pretty similar regarding our morals, our loyality and our image of the self.
When Assail first appeared, he wasn’t anything that I would call sympathetic. However, his rapid development changed this view as rapidly. Thanks to Marisol, the woman he fell in love with and lost just as fast, he became even darker, even more criminal, just to suddenly turn around completely and become not even loyal to the brothers and Wrath, but also a friend of Vishous’.
Still, he is far from being a perfect character, which makes him even better. There’s this similarity to Phury concerning the drug addiction, but also the acceptance of it and finally the withdrawal after his attempt to commit suicide just didn’t work out (thanks, Zsadist!).
I love how he is such an important character for the plot of the novels, regarding the Glymera, the attack of Wrath in his house and finally him working for the king as a spy. And yes, his way to get his hands dirty just makes him even more adorable as a character because it shows that he’s not the rich man who’s got his people to work. I mean, he even does the laundry himself, right?
I believe the way this man will be going will be an interesting one; it will be a hard one, but also one full of loyalty, friendship and most hopefully love. And I am sure J.R. Ward will find a way to bring back Marisol. I’m not sure what his book will be called, but I am waiting happily for it.

It's time to talk about... Murhder

“When do we ever know what we’re walking into,” he said in a low voice. “Destiny is not a straightaway. It’s cluttered with corners and all of them are dark. We make the turns we do… and find ourselves where we are.”
J. R. Ward - The Savior

I found this quote very fitting when wanting to describe Murhder, son of Murhder, long lost member of the Black Dagger Brotherhood. When I got the new novel by J. R. Ward, I was wondering why she felt like she had to continue with the story of someone we don’t know instead of focusing on those already in the household. I was disappointed at first – especially when I realized this would also be about John Matthew again. He had always been my least favorite character. Not because I didn’t like him, rather because I didn’t really care.

So, I started reading this story about all the characters I wasn’t interested in – and I stand corrected. Very much so. Murhder turned out to be one of the loveliest characters this genius author has ever created. There are so many layers to him I wasn’t expecting, so many facets, so much true and honest emotion.

The very first part about him, written from his perspective, had me so confused and I was very annoyed by that. Now I know that is exactly what this was about. I had to understand his madness first to feel like this all made sense; or why it didn’t.

I also feared this all wouldn’t be much more than a complication to make the relationship of JM and Xhex somehow interesting again. And how relieved I was to find out that was not at all the purpose! The whole thing about these other two lovers was to show that there are more dangers to this life they all lead than just a fight between husband and wife or an old rival. It was about dealing with death and finding one’s place in this world. This book finally made me like John Matthew as a character (and Xhex even more because it also gave her more layers, more vulnerability).

Back to the actual star here: Murhder has gone mad. He has done terrible things. But he regrets. And he loves. And he knows about his position and what he did to lose it. He is an honorable man. He is not afraid to show how vulnerable he is. How much it had hurt him, not only to lose his woman but also his brothers. He is the anti-hero who becomes the real hero throughout the story. He heals. He is always truthful and his decisions are all him. I believe every single one of them. He connects it all: past, present and future are combined in his life and his destiny. The destiny he used to believe in, he then doubts and finally trusts again.

When he finally overcomes his madness and has this talk with Tohrment, everything fell into place. He regains his self-trust, confidence and strength. He fights for his beliefs and his love. And it all pays off. Also, did I mention he’s crazy funny? And the way he treats Sarah made me tear up.

This man is all I ever wished for in these books. He climbed up straight to number two on my list of BDB vampires I would marry right away. Because he’s still not Phury with all his conflict and struggle and gentleness and three-colored-hair. But he’s exactly the male I think he was.
